Hired!

Hired!

The most awesome company in the world, Rackspace, hired me yesterday! The people I’ve met so far are great; they’re super nice. I’m going to get to use Ruby and Ruby on Rails on a day to day basis! My first day is September 7th, and I can’t wait. Between now and then we’ll be relocating to San Antonio. We’re pumped.

Thoughts on XBRL

Thoughts on XBRL

The problem with XML based standards is that they’re all intertwined with every other standard or RFC ever invented.

XBRL is dependent upon XML Schema, XLink, and XPointer. XLink is dependent upon XML Base,  XPointer, and Legacy Extended IRIs (LEIRIs). The LEIRI and XML Base specifications are dependent upon several RFCs.

I’m not even a quarter the way through the XBRL specification yet. :-O

Looking for work

Looking for work

Well, Penelope and I are essentially done with our masters degrees. We each passed our thesis defense and all that remains to be done is to finish up some minor formatting corrections that the graduate school tells us to make.

I’ve been looking for Ruby, Clojure, or Java programming positions. If anyone knows of a Ruby, Clojure, Java, PHP, or JavaScript position, please send me a heads-up. I’m applying anywhere that looks interesting. Penelope and I both hope we can stay in Texas, but that all depends on where we find job offers.

Rackspace, in San Antonio, has turned me down 3 times. I wish I knew why. I’ll keep applying because that looks like an interesting place to work. Cloud/distributed/parallel computing is interesting to me, and I’d like to work somewhere that does distributed computing.

Update on 8/25/2010: I am now working at Rackspace as a Ruby programmer.
